As I read somewhere, this is 80% the original Pride & Prejudice with just that 20% being changed to work in the zombie angle. I do really like this book but it was painfully slow to start. It’s a family, where the father was given 5 girls and no son, but trained them in how to kill zombies. They are really good at doing this, but their mother only cares about getting them married off to some well off man. The girls are mixed in opinion on this at that point, our main character does not care at all for the idea of marriage and is only interested in slaying the dead. The entire first half really establishes this and it’s not until the second half everything starts actually falling into place.
I liked the book overall, though it was a pain to read. The entire first half is what took me the better part of a month to read. It didn’t just grab my attention and draw me in to where I had to know more. Not until the last half at least. Upon reaching that point in the book I mowed it down and finished the rest in a matter of days. Before that though, I really thought I might give up and not be able to finish it.
I only recommend this book if you like the concept of zombies in this century. It’s a parallel universe, and though that seems like a big difference, it’s still P&P so if you really couldn’t get through something like that you will have a hard time getting through this book.
As with most people, I love the story of Lizzy and Darcy. I also love Jane and Bingley even though theirs wasn’t as prominent in the story it ran parallel with it.
My least favorite thing about this book in particular happens to be the character, Wickham. Even when you are first introduced and the main character seems to like him I was really put off by everything about him. Luckily he is the kind of antagonist in the book you are supposed to hate so it went well and I think he got his just desserts in the end. Now that I think about it… Kitty was really annoying too. The youngest only caring about guys and running off with Wickham etc etc. Her I would smack if I could.
